Zama ★★

LFF #11

Three things I loved about this film:

1) the whole reason I booked tix in the first place was because I saw that one beautiful, colourful shot with the palm trees and the water and the horses and man that shot is great (the whole thing is very pretty)

2) Lola Dueñas' character is really compelling and I needed much more of her

3) Most importantly, there is a shot involving a llama that is maybe the finest piece of cinema I've ever seen, I'm not even sure how deliberate it was, but it's sooooo good.

Other than that? Really not for me. I can handle slow, but this never grabbed me on a story level whatsoever. I'm eager to check out some of Martel's earlier work though, some of that stuff sounds much more down my alley.
