I've lost count how many times I've read "this movie will keep you guessing" just for the statement to turn out to be complete horseshit. It took David Fincher to finally make me believe that statement can actually be true about a film.
Gillian Flynn makes her screenwriting debut here adapting her own novel, and it's not just one plot development that kept me guessing, but a few. I will keep this spoiler free, but I just want to point out that the developments that kept me guessing weren't because they were shocking, but because they suddenly introduced possibilities for the story to go into multiple directions and it is rare for a film to do that once and even rarer for a film to that multiple times.
Ben Affleck is at his absolute best here. He still isn't in the upper echelon of Hollywood actors, but he probably pulls off one of the most challenging roles of his career here. Rosamund Pike is great as usual, but also pulls off a performance I had never seen from her. The supporting cast was awesome as well... even Tyler Perry.
Well basically Fincher does it again. An outstanding and unique film with a ridiculous attention to detail. When you have film making of this caliber you tend to overlook some of the absurdities that might be in the film. Also... there's a wickedly dark sense of humor from beginning to end here that I loved.
