The Irishman

The Irishman ★★★★½

-Peggy Sheeran

You see people get shot in the head at point blank range in this film, but none of that is as devastating as hearing Peggy (Anna Paquin) ask “Why?” or hearing Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) say “It is what it is”. It’s not just a film about consequences, but what’s left of a man’s soul after those consequences have been paid.

Also can I just say how fucking amazing it is to finally see Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in not only a good film, but a fucking fantastic film again. Add to that seeing Joe Pesci come out of retirement to give what is possibly a career best performance. I have a hard time articulating the joy I got out of seeing Ray Romano in a Martin Scorsese film.

People seem to have different takes on Anna Paquin’s role in this. I think Scorsese doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to female characters, with that said it can’t be overstated how important the character of Peggy Sheeran is in The Irishman and that was executed perfectly. It is what it is.
