Howards End 1992
Like many of the Merchant-Ivory-Jhabvala films it's absolutely perfect. How lucky I am to live in the same time as Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson... magnificent performances, so much rage bubbles under the crust of these characters. The MVP might be Vanessa Redgrave, who in only a handful of scenes conveys the death of an old world.

Yes, the movie seems self-aware about its soulless retread nature. So what? It's still a miserable slog. Being self-aware about how the movie shouldn't exist doesn't make it any better.

The Dry 2020
Great cinematography, great cast, powerful narrative. The plot could have been trimmed down a bit: there’s one particular character who is set up as a red herring, and that whole sequence felt a bit too much in this already complex narrative. But in general it was a really strong film, kinda like a good BBC miniseries with high production values.
