Escape from the Planet of the Apes ★★★½

I liked this one a lot. Gets a lot of mileage out of the "talking apes in modern society!" gag, but not at the expense of character or pathos. Doesn't try to retread the same ground as the previous films, but works as an extension and expansion of the themes covered there. Doesn't explore its themes quite as effectively as the first film, nor does it build to as exciting a climax. But, because the scope and the stakes here are much smaller and character-driven (and because, frankly, Cornelius and Zira are much more interesting and sympathetic protagonists than Heston's Taylor ever was), it works.
