    My interest in this film comes purely from the fact that I'm currently reading Michael Morpurgo's novel with two Year 7 groups, and what I've read so far is lovely. I am only half way through, though, so when I look at the film as an adaptation, it's only the pre-war scenes that I have any basis of comparison with.

    In Morpurgo's novel, the childhood flashback scenes are based greatly in a theme of fraternity and family. Unfortunately, O'Connor's adaptation…

    Watched this 100% because I fell in love with Sally Hawkins yesterday and I have some sort of 2017 movie completionist disease. I didn’t fancy her as much here as I did in Paddington, but her performance is bloody incredible in this, she carries the movie. Unfortunately, it should be about 25% shorter than it is, and the ‘romance’, which didn’t even seem particularly romantic, never stuck out to me. Hawke and Hawkins sounds like it should be a better match than Hawke and Delpy, just on names alone, but it’s nothing close.
