Melville doesn't need words to tell his story, he appeals to the charming Alain Delon, the lone samurai of France.
The atmosphere is rightly created by the film's cold mezzanine and the silent Paris and its secluded streets.
The most important of all is the character of "Costello", who is certainly one of the best and most attractive negative characters in the history of cinema, which is really hard to imagine any actor except Alain Delon for that role.
