I remember watching this in theaters with a bunch of friends and thinking how weird it was. I remember liking it for its beautiful animation and its dad pan humor, but I couldn't help but feel I was missing something. I wonder if it was because I had never before seen a Wes Anderson film before, because I think a part of the charm is for Anderson fans to see his unique style in animation.
Either way, rewatching this after years I still feel the same way but rather than it being weird, I see it as stylistically quirky in all the best ways.
