I think I'm well over the Affleck boys 'average working class (Bostonian) joe' movies. I find it hard sometimes to divorce multi-millionaire actors playing the down trodden labourer and Casey is a decent actor but this material is so on the nose.. it's transparent Oscar bait.
To its credit the movie looks good and functions well enough, the acting is all fine but it's so low stakes as to be pointless. I just didn't care about the characters, their situation or where things are leading. The beats were all there but predictably so. The editing is brutally basic on purpose but I really didn't care for it either.
I will give a lot of credit for the reunion scene, that was emotional stuff from Michelle Williams but I didn't like Afflecks deadpan response.. that's the character but I still didn't think he did a good enough job with what was unsaid.
I can see why people like the movie but in the cold light of last years Three Billboards this pales into insignificance.
