Every scene of this movie is just so thick. The soundtrack is as well. Every time I watch it I find a joke or an actual plot point that I missed last time. Also the body count is very high for a kids movie.
I usually watch this film around this time of year and there’s always something new for me to notice every time. This time I noticed how Judas seems to get a chance to repent when he meets Jesus on the way to the Sanhedrin. And how John and Peter call Mary “mother”. And how every character who really gazes upon Christ is changed; from Simon of Cyrene to Barabbas to the guard who had his ear chopped off.
Then beyond…
This movie, and the whole world it’s set in, gets darker the more you think about it. It might not seem like Jennifer Lawrence is acting very well but I think she captures the awkwardness and general not-that-likeable-but-somehow-you’re-going-for-her-ness of the book Katniss. Katniss shows her character in the most important parts of the story.
