There is no underlying structure here. Writer-director Ari Aster simply throws everything he can think of at the wall, and sure, about half of it sticks. The atmosphere is nice. But there are no rules determining what can and what cannot happen. So ultimately nothing is at stake. And then, when you reach the end of your running time, sure, why not, Satanism.
