Mtume’s review published on Letterboxd:
I just don’t think Ari Aster is very good at narrative filmmaking. He can make moments or sections, but telling stories? With nuance and non contrived threads of concepts? Nah. This whole thing is just a pot of clever thoughts spun together for an unbearably long period of time. No one moves like actual humans and it doesn’t have the insight to create something truly surreal so it could be otherworldly. It cherry picks tropes and motifs but never gives them life, just affectation. It’s hipster filmmaking. It never interested me, and frankly pissed me off from the start when it thought that shock and awe would be enough to connect me emotionally.
It’s just a bad movie, looks nice, but a very bad movie. Nothing worth your time here.
