Wow, I don’t know if I’ve ever experienced a breezier four-hour watch, and and I easily could have sat for another four hours of it without fidgeting. It gives all sorts of opposing forces their due yet never feels overloaded: sincerity and nihilism; religious faith and religious skepticism; violence and tenderness; sentimentality and cynicism. Though its characters engage in behavioral extremes — scrapping in the streets in elaborate martial-arts set pieces, joining cults, wearing disguises to seduce secret crushes — their world feels comfortable and lived in, requiring no effort from us to accept its rules. Just an absolute joy.
