A great western.
Superb performances by Glenn Ford and Van Heflin make it sing – loved their dynamic, the push and pull of their relationship. The movie they're in is a robust piece of studio craftsmanship, not exactly inspired, but impeccable from mise-en-scene to music. Y'know, the kind of movie where everything works. It's the characters that elevate it to greatness.
I had no idea this was based on an Elmore Leonard story (love his novels, but haven't read any of his early westerns). It does have some of that Leonard flavour.
