  Say what you will about the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, we should respect the hell out of how weird Roddenberry was willing to be right out of the gate. God entities, captive jellyfish aliens, Picard losing his shit at Wesley. The foundations were all there - true to the spirit of Star Trek - even if they hadn't quite connected all the pieces correctly yet.

  If nothing else, this pilot captured the essence of deep space horror far better than most big budget movies ever have.

  As far as protégés of The Blair Witch Project go, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is genuinely unsettling in all the right ways. It only staggers briefly towards the end, when it begins to lean too far into familiar genre staples, reminding us that this found footage film is in fact just a movie... but not before scaring you with some disturbing ideas of its own first.

  Room 402 is not for the faint of heart.
