10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You ★★★★

This is a great film. Plain and simple. And it is not merely great, it's one of the finest teen rom-coms I've ever seen. And that is mainly because of the razor-sharp screenplay with an edge: It is hilarious, insightful, intelligent, a little nostalgic, shrewd, with a tender heart, and authentic characters played with verve by an on-point cast, all the while giving a refreshing modern-day spin on Shakespeare's classic Taming of the Shrew.

The dialogue is clever, sharp, and well written. It is head and shoulders above most teen comedies of the last decades. The actors are all well suited for their roles and are enjoyable to watch. Julia Stiles gives a superlative performance as the film's best written character. Heath Ledger fulfills the role as the hunky love interest perfectly (Although his grin scared me a little—Thank you The Dark Knight) dominating the film with swagger and gravitas. Allison Janney has a hilarious, but all too brief role as the school's guidance counselor who is in the middle of writing a trashy soft core sex novel. There are just too many memorable performances in this.

It is unfair that this movie has to have the tag of "teen movie" attached to it. To some people, that equals poison. Especially in this day and age. I'm telling right now, this movie is better than that. This is enjoyable for any age. It's funny, cute, and has more depth and intelligence than most of these types of movies combined. If only all teen movies of this modern era could be as delightful as this one.
