Fun summer type action/thriller. Admired a few brave storytelling choices. Perfect run time for this type of movie.

  • Macbeth

    ★★★½

Great production design. Polanski really makes use of the Middle Ages world. As usual, the Shakespearean dialogue was hard to follow, but the visual storytelling helps viewers along.

  • Sweet Smell of Success

    ★★★½

Great ‘50s NYC vibes. Curtis’s Sydney Falco is a tough hang at times. Wish Lancaster had played J.J. Hunsecker just a smidge more off kilter since his motivations are so bonkers.

  • Chimes at Midnight

    ★★★½

Beautiful film. Sad to see Welles at this stage of his acting career. Little difficult to follow the Shakespearean dialogue, but worth the watch for the visual experience.

  • In the Mood for Love

    In the Mood for Love

    ★★★½

Rewatching a few Wong Kar Wai’s films after listening to the latest Big Picture podcast. Started here because I recall enjoying it the most (and its on HBO Max). Enjoyed the rewatch. Looks impeccable. Very sincere period detail - could be released now as is and it wouldn’t seem early-2000s at all. Strong start, but the film started to lose me a little near the middle when it gets really moody and contemplative. 10/10 on the impeccable different/same dress scale.

  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

    ★★★½

A solid hang. Great showcase for Pitt and DiCaprio as co-leads. Wish the movie had purely focused on their relationship and changing Hollywood in the late 60s. The Manson Family stuff at the end felt very wedged in and unnecessary.
