I've been growing increasingly disinterested in what I'll call "scientific" horror films—or maybe, more to the point, films that smuggle in the scientific under the pretense of metaphor. By scientific, I mean to suggest rule-based, overdetermined plot (among other things). It grates against my sensibility when, as I feel happens here, the science of the film muddles the emotion/themes. In this case, the growing concern with the demonic cult and their endgame (really? riches?) consumes the movie in order to answer a question I did not find compelling in the first place. The turn toward hackneyed cult inanity in the final act betrays both the family drama that is built for most of the film and the more grounded horror that attends it.
