The Myth of the American Sleepover

Now this is my kind of coming of age. There isn't any like it I've ever seen. A refreshment of nostalgia. An adolescent, pubescent slice of white suburban insecurity. It's difficult to put into words the insurmountable strangeness of the film. It's a straightforward script to be clear, but the effictiveness of its simplicity, the natural performances from each character, and malaise of daily life is captured beautifully.

I refuse to believe I'm the only fucking guy who thinks Get Out is way too highly regarded, and that meanwhile Us is The Godfather of sophomore features. Lupita creating a new slasher villain right before our fucking eyes. That couldn't possibly be a hot take.

Haneke's trademark unsentimental and rigorous direction keeps the horror front and center. Never one to cut corners, Haneke keeps the frame laser focused and deliberately wallows in human misery better than any director working today.

  • Melancholia

The 2nd chapter is far more compelling than the 1st, but the wedding sequence is almost filled with enough dread and anxiety as anything I've ever seen.
