    Hilarious, and truly ahead of its time.

    This movie just kept getting weirder in increasingly endearing ways. This movie is smart, and I know so much of it went over my head; I think it says a lot about the appeal of this film that I still loved it. Being John Malkovich revels in its own absurdity in the most entertaining way possible. I can't wait to rewatch this and discover more details in the dense thicket of wit I couldn't comprehend in just one viewing. I also need to see that restaurant scene again for my own personal purposes.

    This film struck deep with me. Justine's depression was depicted with such brutal honesty; she isn't just sad, she's exhausted, she acts impulsively, she lashes out. There is so much depth to her state of mind that extends beyond where most films will go. Her illness isn't understood by those around her: her fiancé is clueless, her brother-in-law is dismissive, her mother is apathetic, and so on.     As deep as the characters in this film travel, it's ironically very shallow.

    I would have much rather rewatched The Descent, or hell, even National Treasure. I found it so hard to feel any sort of dread in a film that demanded so much. It's hard to make a film set hundreds of feet underground in cramped catacombs so un-scary. Whenever these characters faced peril, discount Lara Croft would suddenly remember some ancient Egyptian adage to conveniently progress the plot.…
