    Elmer Gantry

This is a thoroughly mediocre adaption of one of the great works of American literature. Lancaster is great as the charismatic and cynical Gantry, but far too much of the original novel is left on the cutting room floor. This isn’t a bad film by any means, but it’s a little…

    The Lady from Shanghai

When talking about Orson Welles, it’s hard to avoid comparing his other works to his masterpiece Citizen Kane. Whereas that film is a showy but meticulously prepared master-class in cinematographic technique, The Lady From Shanghai is more overtly experimental, flaunting its seams and providing only the barest narrative pretense. No director embodies the films as dreams trope as well as Fellini. 8 1/2 is the ultimate evidence of that. This film creates a narrative in which dreams and reality exist side-by-side, each informed by the other. Images abound with eroticism and tropes of sadism and masochism. Though I personally find La Dolce Vita to be more entertaining, it's undeniable that 8 1/2'a visuals are the strongest of Fellini's black & white period.
