Snow Country ★★★★

Very good melodrama about the troubled love between an already committed geisha and a married painter down on his luck. The snowy landscape is really a sight to behold and the whole film is basically a Keiko Kishi tour-de-force. Also loved Ryô Ikebe understated, austere performance...

Recently screened at Laputa Asagaya Cinema as part of a Keiko Kishi retrospective www.laputa-jp.com/laputa/program/kishikeiko02/, and a big thanks to fellow toei-masochist gojiramike for mentioning this film to me.
