Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★

Feels strange to rate this three stars when it has two of the best if not the two best lead performances I saw in the past year. But this ultimately suffers from biopic disease. Whenever interesting complexity raises its head, it melts away almost instantly into a simplified Hollywood Movie protagonist-antagonist paradigm syrup. It's frustrating because in a few moments it really does poke at something potentially more labyrinthine and real. If the script were as brave as Fred Hampton, this movie might have been more deserving of its two lead performances.
