I can't believe my previous rating since I loved it from first time and it's one of the recent films I keep watching. It's film that I can see more with each repeat viewing and notice the little details. One of those is how perfect the soundtrack is in recreating the feel of the classic films that inspired it. That loud ominous chord that accompanies key points is perfect.
I also love the use of lighting especially in the climax…

This film has some of the best visual designs I've seen in a horror film since Hellraiser.
A squad o of Russian soldiers in the second world war on the eastern front get a radio message from another Russian squad needing help but what they find when they arrive at their location is a hell beyond any of their imagining as this town has been destroyed by the mad Doctor who has created an army of zombies fused with machinery…

Can't have Halloween season without John Carpenter and this is definitely one my favourites of his films. The remote Antarctic location lends the film the natural horror of being isolated in a hostile environment and ramps that up when the creature hides among them so no-one can trust anyone else.
The special effects were ground-breaking at the time and still look amazing with a physical presence that helps the actors in their reactions.

I really have to give myself time to digest this film because what happens is not clear and nor does what happens seems to be the main point.
Scarlett Johansson is an alien driving her van around Glasgow looking for men interested in having sex with her and this clearly fiction since she seems to take some time finding these men and meanwhile we get some fly-on-the-wall views of Glasgow's nightlife.
The film blurs the line between scripted performances and genuine interaction with the life of the city and even if I wasn't clear what was going on I was along for the ride.
