Call Me by Your Name

Call Me by Your Name ★★★★★

At this point, I no longer possess the mental capacity to put my thoughts into words. So instead, I present to you, the thoughts of my mother.

Before I get into this, there are a few things you should know about my mum. We struggle to agree on most things film related and she is very conservative with her 5 star ratings. In my entire 17 years I remember my mother giving out just 2 five star ratings. One for 'Baby Driver' and one for 'The Help'.

She gave 'Call Me By Your Name' five stars without batting an eyelid.

I worried she would not enjoy it as I basically guilt tripped her into taking me by refusing to stop crying when I thought I wouldn't be able to see it. I feared it would not be her kind of film, though I am unsure what her kind of film is. But, as I ran to the bathroom for tissues as the screen faded to black, I turned around and, through her tears she asked me "are you okay?".

We sat down in the car, surrounded by the darkness with Simon and Garfunkel playing on the stereo, both red and blotchy with emotion. She looked at me and said "his papa's speech" causing us to both erupt into tears once again.

She confessed her love for the film on the drive home and asked me more than once "when is Timothée Chalamet going to get an Oscar?". For the duration of the journey home we talked about how much we loved that film, how stressful it was, how tiring it was, how emotional we were. We talked about our theories about each character, we talked about sexual fluidity, we talked about Elio and Oliver for nearly an hour.

I'll write a full review of my thoughts, I promise, but for now I leave you with this. We loved it.
