Dunkirk ★★★★★

I saw this opening day in the UK and the cinema was almost full. Despite the number of people not a single word was spoken, no texting, no crumpling of snack packets, only the occasional sad sniff.

This is my favourite film of the year and by far the most powerful experience I have ever had in the cinema and I didn't even see it in 70mm IMAX!

I've been looking forward to this, for obvious reasons (Chris Nolan, Hans Zimmer, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, even Harry Styles) and it did not disappoint. I honestly have no idea what to say about this. I'm typing and my hands are shaking, my heart is pounding and I feel like I'm on the verge of an anxiety attack. I'm going to try and keep this brief because I need to go and lie on my bed and have a panic attack for a while.

Hans Zimmer's score is flawless, gorgeous, every other positive adjective in the English language. There is no way that this film would have been as incredible as it was without Zimmer's composition. The sounds are so loud and threatening, the gunshots shook the cinema and the almost constant ticking in the background makes for an extremely anxious watch.

Nolan does a great job of directing, as would be expected. The final shots of 'Dunkirk' are devastating.

The performances are incredible. Mark Rylance continues to amaze me and Tom Hardy in his final scene had me so shaken up. The exploration into what war does to people was fascinating with Cillian Murphy and Harry Styles in particular embodying such hard emotions in a stunning manner.

It's a gorgeous film despite it's difficult subject matter and I am completely in awe. I cried for about three quarters of this film because it just never lets up. For the first third of 'Dunkirk' I bit my nails so much that my thumb started to bleed. I then spent another third with both hands over my heart as it pounded loud and hard in my chest. I spent the final part of the film holding onto my hoodie like I was on a roller-coaster. Finally it ended and I was left heartbroken and shaken and wanting to scream. I will be seeing this again but for now I have to go and hyperventilate.
