All Square

John Hyams made this before Alone, and it's kind of a similar operation: nothing new, just an exercise in doing it impeccably. It's the "violent/depressed small-town loner who befriends a kid and looks for redemption" type of story that you'd normally cast Billy Bob Thornton in, but it works hard to stay gritty and avoid the classic Hollywood sentimentality, and it succeeds. It helps knowing a bit about baseball though.
