This is a damn good movie. What it doesn't get enough credit for though is its script. It might have been finished on the fly but its characters are all really solid and interesting, and the dialogue absolutely crackles.
It reminded me a lot, this time, of The Birds, not least because of Spielberg's Hitchcockian tendency to imply, rather than show, the source of terror. We don't see the shark until an hour into the film!
The actors are all really great and it's important that the drama of their relationships is as important as any shark-related drama that might ensue. Roy Scheider might even be the most underrated actor from the 70s.
The last half hour drags on a bit for me but at least Spielberg has the good sense to end it as quickly as possible after the climax.
