    Scream 4

The appeal of Ghostface has never been about grandstanding but back-to-basics slasher horror. The original Scream managed to resurrect a genre that had fallen by the wayside, introducing a new generation to the simplistic slicing-and-dicing of screen killers like Michael Myers and Norman Bates. Aside from the odd garage door and gun, this is a knife-wielding operation only – there is no room for torture porn here.

    I Am Number Four

I Am Number Four is actually very watchable. Timothy Olyphant (as Henri) and Palmer both flesh out their one-dimensional characters well, and the gaudy effects work. Somehow the entire film shamelessly hangs together from the exposition heavy start to the non-ending, and manages to hold back from being ‘so bad it’s good’. It’s silly but good with it, and refrains from falling into total parody or shoving self-awareness down your throat, although suspension of disbelief is a must.

    Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Tucker & Dale is a hilarious and original take on the hillbilly-horror genre, and has undertones of the spoof Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday 13th (which is a great personal favourite). This fantastic feature-length début from director Eli Craig should set the precedent for comedy horror mash-ups.

    The Glass Man

The Glass Man carefully treads the line between humour and tragedy, a finely tuned horror set in a seemingly nonthreatening middle-class environment. Never has freshly squeezed orange juice signified such foreboding.
