Nathan Waggenspack’s review published on Letterboxd:
Laika's models and animation look absolutely wonderful, but the rest of The Boxtrolls misses the mark.
Whereas the other Laika films have had multilayered, entertaining stories with funny characters, everything important that happens in this film revolves around cheese. Perhaps meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, but it really doesn't work with the otherwise serious subject matter. For instance, a distracted father is a fine plot point for this film, but Lord Portley-Rind ignoring his only daughter because of cheese? Doesn't really work.
Elicits a few chuckles, and I'm not disappointed I watched it, but it pales in comparison to Coraline and ParaNorman.
