    Johnny Guitar

Ostensibly a Western. This is actually more like Black Narcissus than anything directed by John Ford or Howard Hawks. Johnny Guitar is a psychosexual melodrama of repressed urges and feminine rivalries with horses, pistols, and a saloon. The colors are so rich and deep you could drown in them.

    Mars Attacks!

Unironically appreciate how Tim Burton assembled one of the most stellar casts I've heard of (Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Pam Grier, Glenn Close, Danny DeVito, Jim Brown, Jack Nicholson as POTUS giving a performance essentially identical to the one he gave as the Joker, LOL) for a goofy yet cynical comedy based on trading cards. Hell of a way to follow up your greatest film/biggest flop. Respect.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)

A briskly entertaining picture, despite hitting many familiar notes of middle class dysfunction. Genuinely enraging how fucking good Adam Sandler is at acting when he's not doing his crude, lazy shtick.

    Dumb and Dumber

Oh, to live in a world where every low-brow comedy was as winning as this one! Dumb and Dumber holds up much better than any other pre-Truman Show feature starring Jim Carrey. It's all deeply silly and absurd, yet almost always in surprisingly amusing ways (I will forever have a deeply mischievous laugh at Lloyd selling the decapitated dead bird to a blind kid; how can you not chuckle at him proclaiming "I don't know, but I'm gonna get you"…
