Safe to say this is not Spielberg’s best film about WW2. So much wrong with this. It feels like a comedy made by someone who doesn’t understand how comedy works. The end result is aesthetically pleasing but fails to engage the audience in story or character. Slapstick and histrionics were a bad choice, and that tone undermines any good will you may feel toward the performers or the filmmaker. I went in expecting a bad movie, and that’s what I got!
What a fantastic movie! Lemmon and MacLaine are just delightful. The pacing and structure of the story are spot on. The whole thing is just oozing warmth and charisma. I loved how dark the movie was able to get while retaining this unique sense of whimsy and innocence. I was charmed.
