I loved how real the characters felt, the penguin stuffed animal, Brad Dourif and his single tear, the set design of the hospital, and the subtle but constant presence of fog. Biggest qualm is that the last 15 min felt like they were from a different movie. Could have used a slightly more grounded final act. But fire snakes are fun too.
Cinematography and costumes don’t make a movie great. This story could be told, in full, in 5 sentences. I see where they tried to go with the whole man trying to figure out his place in life and doing a bad job at it thing. But they threw him down the rabbit hole with no context and no logic. The movie is made of under-developed, unexplained, half-scenes propped up by gorgeous imagery. It lacked nuance, depth, and emotional truth. Full of sound and fury signifying nothing. I’m so disappointed. What a missed opportunity.
