Annette ★★★★½

an exhausting, stunning odyssey taking artistry, eccentricity, and narcissism head on. like holy motors' evil twin, a movie that feels like an indictment against the artist's ego, and an inability to separate your art from your life, and to not see your child as your creation. i laughed harder than i have in a theater in a long time, and yet feel more drained than anything with what i sat with. but in a deeply satisfying way. i don't always just see tons of people saying carax is doing eccentricity for eccentricities sake, but his stuff does get that, yet here that seems like that's all absolutely baked into the point of so much of it. he's starring these ideas in the face, unflinchingly. my one sentence joke review was gonna be "mulholland driver
