I like the concept of this Tremors Frat Party creature feature so I gave it a shot, but oh boy, did it whiff hard.

Acting being painfully bad and gore looking cheap can be tolerable, but not when the performances are played this straight and the CG is this ugly.

Jamie Kennedy's cameo brightens what is an otherwise wasteful puddle of slop.

    Mass

    ★★★★½

A frankly stunning example of bare bones setting and setup really working for a movie.

Mass does its heavy lifting in how magnificently intense, angry, and emotional its four main characters are about dealing with their grief and trauma. Yes, it definitely helps to have kids to really get the gut punch hard, but all the same, this is a beautifully reasoned piece.

Honestly surprised by this, and then I saw the Letterboxd score and my surprise grew.

Yes, Vivarium isn't all that subtle with its underlying themes and metaphors, and yes, I get why people might be annoyed by the muted conclusion, but I believe it's presented and performed in such a consistent and compelling manner that such criticism is doing it a disservice.

Imogen Poots makes the film tick, bringing some humanity to the intentional sterility on display.

    Us

    ★★★★

As with Get Out, I came into Us after the initial hype and release had been and gone, and subsequently feared it couldn't be as good as I hoped in both cases.

And in both cases I was wrong. Us is a funny, sinister tale filled with hypnotic acting, shots, and musical choices.

Lupita Nyong'o absolutely owns this film in her dual roles. Props to Winston Duke though for providing the comic relief.
