    Serviceable political thriller with solid performances by Hackman and Jones, but I wouldn't have watched it, and likely wouldn't have enjoyed it quite as much, had it not been shot lovingly in Chicago and packed with local spots: Union Station (naturally), Chicago Hilton and Towers, Ciral's House of Tiki in Hyde Park, New Yankee Grill in Uptown, the old Madison & Wabash station. As Roger Ebert wrote in his review at the time, "few directors get more out of a location than Davis," who gives us "an almost palpable sense of the city."

    I love the way that Lonergan allows the scenes to breathe, embracing the awkward pauses and conversational stumbles, letting the camera linger when other directors might cut away. For instance, the scene in the hospital when Affleck exits and we watch the friend, George, allow himself to weep while the nurse grabs a tissue. Or the scene early on when Affleck calls his boss on the road, detailing who will be filling in while he's gone. It's not at all…
