    It’s incredible in a way how this movie can be brilliant and iconically inspirational to future films, yet at the same time be massively overrated and example of 80’s culture seen too much through rose tinted windows.

    The concept of Gremlins is great and creative and something surely fascinating when it first hit cinemas nearly 40 years ago. Though other aspects from creature designs to writing and sheer over-reliance on references as jokes hampers it greatly.

    Burton was clear trying to pay homage to classic horror of yesteryear, but Frankenweenie misses that completely through a lack of originality and humour that simply never lands.

    Though the stop motion visuals are impressive and the presentation in black and white is welcomingly refreshing, it is the plot and characters where the film struggles to meet the high hurdles set by itself.

    Onward is a glorious example not only that the studio can still create imaginative and interesting worlds full of life, humour and joy, but their talents in telling a fun, character driven and emotional story that tugs on the heartstrings hasn’t disappeared.

    Additional props go to performances from Chris Pratt and Tom Holland who bring fantastic chemistry even when restricted to voice acting.
