    Bait

    ★★★★★

Bait contains some of the most impressive and expressive editing I've seen in a while. Cuts are used stylistically to juxtapose lifestyles, to foreshadow, to recontextualize information, and perhaps most frequently to build tension. This tension is aided by the grimy, yet beautiful cinematography. Shot in 16mm black and white film, which was processed by director Mark Jenkin himself, this is incredibly atmospheric, placing you in a position where you can almost smell and taste the salt water. Jenkin also…

  • The Hunt

    The Hunt

    ★½

'The Hunt' tries its hardest to satirize the current political discourse in America. The way it does this is bizarre to say the least. The rich are portrayed as "liberal snowflakes" and are made fun of for being vegan (?) and attending therapy (??). The poor are portrayed contrastingly as "deplorables", and are poked fun at for being stupid. All of this satire is seldom funny, and frequently cringe-inducing and rudderless. And that is the greatest flaw of this film: it seemingly has nothing to say. It attempts to be impartial in making jokes about the whole political landscape, but ends up being a confused mess.

    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

    ★★★★½

This is the superhero movie of 2018. Not Infinity War, definitely not Black Panther, it's this. I had heard nothing but positive reviews of this film going in, and now I can understand why. It is so refreshing and exhilarating from start to finish. Everything from the story to the music to the aesthetic of this just fits wonderfully. Perhaps my only major gripe with the film is that the change in Miles' character happens a little too quickly to…

    A Star Is Born

    ★★★½

I'll preface this review by saying I haven't seen any of the previous "A Star Is Born" films, so I have nothing to compare this with. That being said, I found this version to be a powerful and honest look into the positives and negatives of the music industry. The performances and the music are the real driving force for this film, Cooper and Gaga produce very impactful performances that are bound to be nominated for (and potentially win) Oscars.…
