Richard Gere is ten years too old for this role (although admittedly attacks it like he's Nicolas Cage), and Valerie Kaprisky makes a hash of her big break, but this American remake of the French classic still manages to be a pretty good film, albeit minus the originals existential cool.

    Avengers: Age of Ultron

I had one enjoyable moment: an extra doing a hilariously over-acted running limp... a glimpse of character in otherwise featureless sludge.

A journey into George W Bush's unconscious: 300 naked homophobic Greek (=American) men slaughter thousands of Middle Eastern transvestites.

  • Xala

Xala ('temporary erectile dysfuntion') is a Senegalese classic that I'd describe as 'more interesting than entertaining'.

Working against it is clunky editing, a slow pace, expressionless acting, wonky camerawork and several scenes too many set inside generic white rooms. All this creates a surprisingly po-faced atmosphere at odds with the films Xala-cious premise.

However, it is not without its funny moments and whenever the camera roams freely it is fascinating to observe Senegal in the background. And the films bigger themes about colonialism and the corrupt upper-class hit their marks confidently.
