“I have found a new form of prayer.”

So have I, Reverend.  It’s watching First Reformed over and over again.

Sorry to Bother You, Blindspotting, and now BlacKkKlansman.

They make up the 2018 trifecta of unorthodox political movies that “America needs right now.”

If only the people who need to see them would actually watch them.

Were they straight up trying to make this boring because that’s what it felt like

It’s cheesy, it’s thematically confused, and its attempts to explore racial/ethnic/sexual identity are surface-level at best...  but I’ll be damned if I said it wasn’t charming.

This movie made me feel a new emotion that can only be described as “happy cringe.”  I was simultaneously smiling like an idiot and cringing internally throughout the entire chicken nugget scene at the end.

    ★★★½

I sat on this movie for a few days and this is the rating I decided on.  Don’t hate me.

While there were several truly awe-inspiring and horrifying sequences, everything else was surprisingly bland and/or unnecessarily confusing with a lot of aesthetic choices that I did not really understand.  I’m all for ambiguity in films, but I was really struggling to comprehend large chunks of the narrative even after the credits rolled.

I don’t think it’s a masterpiece, but Suspiria (2018) is still quite a good movie and one that I will not forget for a long time.  Tilda Swinton is a force of nature.
