Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth ★★★★

I was kind of using this as a preparation for The Shape Of Water, and I gotta say it does not disappoint. First off, this film looks stunning. Each and every shot feels carefully crafted and precise, and I was just in awe of the visuals and presentation of this film. There are many scenes that feel warm in their tone and colors, but then we get scenes deep in the mud, so to speak. The production and costume design was remarkable. The practical effects were also pretty amazing, which totally saved for the less-believable computer effects. The sound design was also pretty fantastic, and it made all the weird creatures we encountered feel very unique. The score is also pretty good too. From a technical aspect, this film is exceptional. I also thought the story was really well thought out. Though it does get undeniably weird at times, it never feels jarring or TOO weird.

Ophelia is the perfect protagonist. You want to protect her from all the horrors she has to face. You actually care about her safety, and the film is always putting her in situations that actually scare you. And I was scared QUITE a bit. There are many unforgettable, haunting moments in this film that will never cease from my mind.

The whole time I was watching this, I couldn't help but think that this, above anyone else, was del Toro's movie. This is what he wanted to make: a visual and narrative masterpiece in every sense of the word. I can't wait to see Shape Of Water, though I don't think I will like it as much as I like this.

Edit: this is a 5 cause why not.
