AKA Portrait of two boring women by the sea.
All we have here are thinly written caricature’s of 19th century women. The similarities between this and God’s Own Country are uncanny, we explore the same themes of loneliness, desire and isolation but with a less successful end result imo. This should’ve stayed in the Wattpad drafts.
Two cast members (Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Elisabeth Shue) put in a performance worthy of the exceptional source material. Gregg Araki is a talented director, he creates a unique atmosphere but the script and acting are what let this film down the most. Having now read the book, I can say that this is one of those cases where the novel is markedly better. There are small but crucial details left out of the film and these subtle pieces of character development are what make the book so compelling.
