Possession seems to take place almost in another world. Everything about the film has been dialed up to 200%. It's the restless camera that won't let you breath for a sec because it always wants to show you something. It's Anna screaming at the top of her lungs out of frustration, and Mark feeling useless. It's that haunting score that creeps up on you unexpectedly. It's the very hands-on and essentric Heinrich. It's the Metro tunnel scene.
Praise be to Żuławski. It's almost a miracle that a film as bold as this exists (in surprising fact, Paramount had a hand in producing it). I haven't looked through all the interview/documentary on the blu-ray but I'm curious about the extent to which politics played a role in this film. I know that Mr. Ż couldn't get this made in Poland but he was adamant about shooting it in West Germany and of course it's almost impossible not to notice the Berlin Wall staring you in the eye.
There's a heck of a lot going on in this movie, both above and beneath the surface. Creepy, perverted, disturbing, and the finale is bananas.
