    Yes, Madam!

absolutely whipped. loved that this movie just kept introducing new parties until it ended; kept every scene a little off kilter to offset the certainty of michelle kicking ass

    Cléo from 5 to 7

not to take away from corinne marchand's performance at ALL but varda's camera really drifts away from her expression towards city life during so many moments of contemplative dread in this film that the city ~becomes a character~ in a way that so few films spend the time actually committing to.

also feel like there's a lot of modern application specifically to the space cleo occupies as a v1 micro influencer, and the film's decision to treat her worldview and…

    The Batman

turns out "moody and noir-styled detective batman becomes disenchanted with the non-profit industrial complex" was at the top of the list of things that i didn't know i needed but very much did

    Titane

appreciated that in contrast to raw, which withheld the origins of its protagonist's condition to the end of the film for a closing shot that was jarring but ultimately felt inconsequential to the themes at play, titane quickly catches us up to speed and then lets it rip for the first 30 minutes before settling into its more humanistic back half.

haven't seen lots of the movies that people compare this to, but the dance scenes with the firefighters felt…

    Crazy Rich Asians

this is like my fourth rewatch lol. yeah this one holds up and means a lot to me. the Representation Matters button really got mashed to death when this came out, and i don't want to take away from the movie's textual merits and joys (of which there are many!), but also the first time i saw this i involuntarily cried at the implications of that coldplay cover. (still cry every time bc fuck the construction of that proposal scene is so undeniable)

    The Matrix Resurrections

ahahahahahahahaha holy shit i can't believe this exists.

lots of comparisons to the last jedi, but honestly the piece of art this most reminds me of is frank ocean's endless—just absolute disdain for the necessity of its existence, somehow subsumed into reclamation of one's own art for the personal purposes of the artist.

tbh i really needed this as i've been on a big, discouraging "art is inherently apolitical" kick lately; this movie makes a strong case that art is…
