Eve's Bayou

Eve's Bayou ★★★★★

The last time I saw this was on VHS, which dates it any way you slice it.

Kasi Lemmons' debut tells of family secrets and how memories aren't always reliable.

Sam Jackson is a philandering doctor who may have given a prescription to the wrong woman one time too many.

(And by prescription, do you mean...)

Yes. Young Jurnee Smollet is the titular Eve, Sam Jackson's daughter who might have given a prescription to the wrong woman one time too many.

(And by prescription, do you mean...)

Yes.

Some of Lemmons' film feels predictable, but you won't get everything and even the stuff you do predict comes at you sideways.

An engrossing family drama with a side of voodoo. Warns you not to give a prescription to the wrong woman one time too many or else you've got too many prescriptions.

Don't let this movie get bayou.
