Sounder ★★★

This is an interesting, fairly well-made coming-of-age story that avoids sentimentality, but the film suffers from the TV-movie feel. Daniel Lee Robertson III is very good in the lead role as the boy, giving an engaging performance that makes the viewer care about the character he portrays. "Sounder" is a remake of the 1972 film of the same name—which, in turn, is based on William H. Armstrong’s book "Sounder"—and there are at least two connections between the films: the remake is directed by Kevin Hooks, who played the central character in the original, and the teacher in the remake is played by Paul Winfield, who played the father in the original.
