Peter Ericson’s review published on Letterboxd :
Given all the positive reviews of this movie that I have read, I expected it to be a movie I would really like. My expectation turned out to be wrong.
The photography is great, the score works well, and the acting is excellent. My complaint is the way the story is told, which, to tell the truth, made me somewhat confused and gave me a slight feeling of boredom a few times, the latter due at least partly to the former. To be fair, this is perhaps a problem with the cinematic translation of the source material, Alice Walker’s book of the same name.
"The Color Purple" is worth watching, but on the whole I don’t think it is such a special movie as some (most?) of the reviews of it would have you believe.
