The Pursuit of Happyness ★★★½

The film is moving without being overly sentimental or manipulative, with an engaging story based on true events and characters one cares about. While "The Pursuit of Happyness" is largely predictable, it offers an inspirational message and interesting details, some of which are related to the realistic recreation of San Francisco in 1981. Will Smith and Jaden Christopher Syre Smith are excellent and give believable performances, and their being father and son in real life adds an extra dimension to their on-screen relationship. Thandie Newton’s acting is unconvincing and somewhat annoying. I was pleasantly surprised to see Dan Castellaneta, the voice of Homer Simpson, in a small role as a man with a taste for—it could not have been more appropriate—donuts.
