Venus ★★★½

Peter O’Toole gives a great and measured performance as a veteran actor whose life changes in unexpected ways when he meets the daughter (Jodie Whittaker) of his close friend’s (Leslie Phillips) niece. Though the two central characters take advantage of each other, they also feel a mutual, mostly non-physical attraction that transcends age. The movie could have been controversial—perhaps even repulsive—but the story is handled with care and delicacy, and is infused with humor (there is a very funny scene that involves a non-standard use of a waste bin). "Venus" challenges the viewer to embrace a definition of love that includes circumstances in which age is of little or no importance.
