Perfect Blue

Perfect Blue ★★★★½

Imagine what Perfect Blue would be like if it were written today. Mima would be pushed into influencing and her stalker would have a TikTok. Satoshi Kon would be terrified of today's internet.

I do think one key thing would drastically change the move if it were remade today: the internet is no longer new. A key part of Perfect Blue's horror is that the internet is Unknown. Mima's first introduction to computers is her stalker's blog – it probably hadn't crossed her mind that computers would be so dangerous. A sequel/remake of Perfect Blue would have to acknowledge that the protagonist and audience already know how horrific the internet can be.

I also cannot stop thinking about Satoshi Kon's portrayal of DID. In the crime show, the character with DID is a criminal, whereas Mima is portrayed as a victim of her dissociation (ie. the audience is sympathetic to Mima). It's such a striking contrast. I'll be thinking about this for a while.
